SMTP delivers camera images straight to an email inbox — Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo or your own mail server. It is the most universal, lowest-cost way to archive photos, and the integration we are asked about most.
Over cellular or Wi-Fi the camera opens an authenticated SMTP session (LOGIN/PLAIN, typically over TLS on port 465 or STARTTLS on 587) and attaches the JPEG to a message addressed to your configured inbox. No middleman stores the image — it lands in mail you already control.
The usual failure points are provider-specific: app passwords instead of account passwords, blocked less-secure-app access, and wrong port/encryption settings. We document the exact fixes for the common providers so setup does not become a support ticket.
| Transport | Email (SMTP / SMTPS) |
|---|---|
| Encryption | TLS (465) / STARTTLS (587) |
| Recipients | Any inbox (Gmail / Outlook / Yahoo / self-hosted) |
| Platform fee | None (carrier data only) |
| Archiving | Native to your mailbox |
| App required | No |
Choose SMTP when you want photos in an inbox you already use, with zero recurring platform cost. It is excellent for archiving and for alerting a distribution list.
If you need programmatic access or a branded app, pair SMTP with our Cloud API. For simple phone alerts without email, MMS is the lighter option.
